The Challenge – Managing a Giant Western Red Cedar
We were contacted by a private homeowner in Foyers, a village on the south side of Loch Ness, to carry out specialist work on a towering Western red cedar. The tree stood adjacent to the client’s garden boundary, alongside a similarly sized Sequoia, dominating the skyline and raising concerns about long-term safety.
The client had two main goals:
- To reduce the height and weight of the tree to improve wind resistance and limit sway
- To perform a crown lift for better daylight access and to allow safe movement beneath the canopy
From the ground, it was clear this was no ordinary job. The cedar was an exceptional specimen, with multiple dominant leaders at the top forming unions - potential weak points where limbs could shear in strong winds.
