Case Study: Crown Reduction & Lifting in Foyers – Western Red Cedar Near Loch Ness

  Date of Project:
December 2025

Type of Client:
Residential homeowner

Project Location:
Foyers, South Loch Ness, Scottish Highlands

The Challenge – Managing a Giant Western Red Cedar

We were contacted by a private homeowner in Foyers, a village on the south side of Loch Ness, to carry out specialist work on a towering Western red cedar. The tree stood adjacent to the client’s garden boundary, alongside a similarly sized Sequoia, dominating the skyline and raising concerns about long-term safety.

The client had two main goals:

  • To reduce the height and weight of the tree to improve wind resistance and limit sway
  • To perform a crown lift for better daylight access and to allow safe movement beneath the canopy

From the ground, it was clear this was no ordinary job. The cedar was an exceptional specimen, with multiple dominant leaders at the top forming unions - potential weak points where limbs could shear in strong winds.

Our Solution – Height Reduction, Crown Lift, and Deadwood Removal

After conducting a site inspection and ensuring there was no nesting wildlife or protected species present, we developed a tailored plan to safely reduce the tree’s size without harming its health.

Services Delivered:

  • Height Reduction (~15 feet): Targeted reduction of co-dominant tops with included unions, to reduce wind loading and prevent limb failure
  • Crown Lifting: Raised the lower canopy to client specifications to improve light access and usable ground space
  • Deadwood Removal: Cleared internal dead branches to reduce risk and improve airflow through the crown
  • Safe Sectional Work: Used advanced rigging techniques to manage the drop zone and avoid property damage
  • Site Cleanup: All branches processed on-site using a chipper, with waste responsibly removed or repurposed

Due to the tree’s scale, the climb was complex. Tight working space and a narrow landing zone meant precision rigging was essential to bring each section down safely and cleanly. From the top of the tree, climbers had panoramic views over Loch Ness and the Highland landscape - a reminder of both the beauty and challenge of arborist work in the region.

Before-and-After Overview

Before:

  • Giant Western red cedar with multiple dominant tops
  • Risk of structural failure due to included unions
  • Dense lower canopy causing shading and restricted access
  • Accumulated deadwood creating safety hazards

After:

  • Height safely reduced to ease stress on structural points
  • Crown lifted to client’s desired clearance level
  • Deadwood removed, improving airflow and appearance
  • Tree left healthy, balanced, and far less vulnerable to wind damage

Results & Outcomes

✔ Reduced risk of failure from included unions

✔ Enhanced safety and daylight access in the client’s garden

✔ Improved tree structure and long-term vitality

✔ No wildlife disturbed, and all work BS3998-compliant

✔ Full client satisfaction: project completed on time and without complications
